Az országúton végig a szekéren
“Az országúton végig a szekéren” - inspired by a Hungarian poem from Sándor Petőfi
A négyökrös szekér (Magyar)
Nem Pesten történt, amit hallotok.
Ott ily regényes dolgok nem történnek.
A társaságnak úri tagjai
Szekérre ültek és azon menének.
Szekéren mentek, de ökörszekéren.
Két pár ökör tevé a fogatot.
Az országúton végig a szekérrel
A négy ökör lassacskán ballagott.
Világos éj volt. A hold fenn vala;
Halványan járt a megszakadt felhőkben,
Miként a bús hölgy, aki férjinek
Sírhalmát keresi a temetőben.
Kalmár szellő járt a szomszéd mezőkön.
S vett a füvektől édes illatot.
Az országúton végig a szekérrel
A négy ökör lassacskán ballagott.
A társaságban én is ott valék,
S valék szomszédja épen Erzsikének,
A társaságnak többi tagjai
Beszélgetének s énekelgetének.
Én ábrándoztam s szóltam Erzsikéhez:
"Ne válasszunk magunknak csillagot?"
Az országúton végig a szekérrel
A négy ökör lassacskán ballagott.
"Ne válasszunk magunknak csillagot?"
Szólék én ábrándozva Erzsikéhez.
"A csillag vissza fog vezetni majd
A mult időknek boldog emlékéhez,
Ha elszakaszt a sors egymástul minket."
S választottunk magunknak csillagot.
Az országúton végig a szekérrel
A négy ökör lassacskán ballagott.
The Cart with Four Oxen (Angol)
All this did not happen in Budapest -
Things so romantic do not happen there.
The gentle members of our company
Climbed on the cart, but a cart drawn by oxen,
Two pairs of oxen formed the postilion.
And down the dusty high-road with the ox-cart
The four oxen quietly wandered on.
The night was light. A pallid moon was shining;
Wove in and out from behind tattered clouds,
Like a sad lady seeking in the graveyard
Her husband's grave in between tired crowds.
A mercurial wind came to the meadows
Stole sweet fragrance from grasses, and was gone...
Along the dusty high-road with the ox-cart
The four oxen quietly wandered on.
I myself was in that company, and
I was sitting next to gentle 'Lisabet -
The other members of the company
Were talking or singing a chansonette.
I was lost in dreams and said to 'Lisabet:
"Shall we select a star now for our own?"
Along the dusty high-road with the ox-cart
The four oxen quietly wandered on.
"Shall we select a star now for our own?"
Repeated 1, dreaming aloud, to 'Lisabet,
"The star will guide us back in future days
To memories of past-time happiness
If fate should separate us from each other..."
And so we chose a star for our own.
Along the dusty high-road with the ox-cart
The four oxen quietly wandered on.
